Native American actors in Hollywood have made an impact on the film culture of the United States since the early 20th century. The involvement of Native American actors in Hollywood ranges from the vaudevillian acts of Will Rogers in the 1920s and '30s to the Old West epics, including "Dances With Wolves" and "Last of the Mohicans." Some of these actors are household names and have offered Academy Award-nominated performances.

Will Rogers

Will Rogers was one of the most popular comedian actors in the Golden Age of Hollywood; he was part Cherokee. Rogers was born in modern-day Oklahoma in the late 1870s. Before becoming an actor, Will Rogers was a cowboy. He often performed in Wild West rodeo shows. This early Hollywood-era actor gained notoriety for his vaudevillian performances with lasso tricks and stand-up comedy. Some of Rogers most well-known films were in the 1930s, including "Judge Priest" and "Doctor Bull."

Burt Reynolds

Born in Lansing, Mich., Burt Reynolds has acted in more than 50 motion pictures since his career began in the mid-1950s. Reynolds' Native American ancestry traces back to his father's family; this paternal grandfather was full-blooded Cherokee. Some of Burt Reynolds' most notable movies were in the 1970s. They include "Smokey and the Bandit," "Deliverance," "The Longest Yard" and "The Cannonball Run." Reynolds also starred in movies in which he played a Native American, such as "100 Rifles" and "Navajo Joe."

Graham Greene

Canadian-born actor Graham Greene was born in 1952 in Ontario, Canada at Six Nations Reserve. He is a full-blooded Oneida Native American. Greene was One of Greene's most notable films, "Dances with Wolves," allowed the Native American actor to play the role Kicking Bird, a Sioux medicine man. Greene's performance in "Dances With Wolves" earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Other movies with Greene include "The Green Mile," "Diehard With a Vengeance" and "Powwow Highway."

James Garner

James Garner was born in Norman, Okla., in 1928. His mother was one-half Cherokee Native American. Before embarking on an acting career, Garner was a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines and a soldier in the Korean War. Garner's primary role in Hollywood has been starring in popular television shows. During the 1950s, Garner starred in the show "Maverick" as the title role, Brett Maverick. Other shows starring Garner include the "Rockford Files" and "8 Simple Rules."

Wes Studi

Born in 1947, Wes Studi is a full-blooded Cherokee Native American actor from Oklahoma. Throughout his acting career, Studi has played the role of Native Americans in multiple films, including "Last of the Mohicans," "Dances With Wolves," "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and "Geronimo: An American Legend" in which Studi played the title role, Geronimo. In spite of his successful movie career, Studi never moved to California. T the Native American actor currently lives in Santa Fe, N.M.

How to Audition for Movies in Hollywood

Becoming a movie actor in Hollywood is a challenging field that takes preparation and patience. Just to reach the level of auditioning for a featured role (or even a speaking role) in a film takes a lot of hard work. Rejection is part of show business; professional actors need to learn to take it in stride and not become discouraged. Remember, if you don't get a part, it is not personal. Stay motivated and persistent, and that dedication may result in a dream role.

LANDING A SPEAKING ROLE

Sign with an acting agent by mailing your head shot and resume to every agent in Los Angeles and following up with a polite call or email to see if they are accepting new clients. In order to get a speaking part in a movie, you usually need to be sent to the audition by an agent.

Memorize the scenes your agent sends you, and prepare as much as you can in the allotted time before a given audition. When your agent sends you on an audition, he will first send you the auditioning scene.

Go to the audition. Be on time, be professional and do exactly what the producer or casting director asks of you. When they say "thank you," and release you, thank them for their time and leave.

Join the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) union once you receive a speaking line in a film; you then need to belong to SAG before you can film another scene. Check their website for membership fees and dues, as well as advice and industry links.

GETTING EXTRA WORK

Check actor's message boards throughout Los Angeles and online for word of extra work. Extras are background people in movies. These are the easiest film acting jobs to get, and you can use them to pad your resume.

Participate in open calls for crowd shots for movies, or audition if producers have a "cattle call" open audition that anyone can attend.

Work as an extra in crowd shots as often as possible. It pays a little, sometimes $50 to $100. Use it to meet people in the film industry, network with professionals, and gain experience.

PREPARATION

Obtain training in acting. Take classes or a workshop from a reputable professional. Study acting as much as you can.

Get head shots taken by a professional photographer. A head shot is a close-up picture of a person's face, designed to give casting directors an idea of what you might look like on film. They range in price quite a bit, though you may wish to begin with a very basic package.

Create an acting resume, or hire someone to create one. Do this even if you have very little experience to list. Samples of good acting resumes can be found online. The website bestsampleresume.com will provide helpful examples.

Tip

When starting out, pay only for training, head shots and a resume, if you have it professionally done. Even then, shop around and research the credentials of the people you use. Never pay up front to sign with an agent; they will take a percentage of work you receive. And never pay to join forums or any other industry service which should be free.
